WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States has voiced strong opposition to a recommendation on “sustainable” aviation fuels made during the 13th triennial meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), according to a statement from the State Department on Monday.
“This recommendation to the ICAO Council on multi-cropping, the practice of growing two or more crops on the same land for sustainable aviation fuels, would unfairly penalize U.S. farmers and significantly benefit Brazil over the rest of the world,” Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said. “The U.S. government believes this proposal is premature and lacks sufficient technical or scientific justification.”
Despite U.S. objections, CAEP adopted the recommendation, which the State Department claims will harm U.S. farmers and the aviation industry while incentivizing deforestation of tropical forests.
The United States reiterated its commitment to constructive dialogue at ICAO and CAEP and expressed a willingness to collaborate with member states, U.S. industry, and other stakeholders on recommendations that align with U.S. interests and contribute to ICAO’s goals.
In line with the recent Executive Order, “Putting America First in International Environmental Agreements,” the U.S. delegation worked with more than 33 member states, U.S. industry representatives, and other observers on proposals aimed at upholding aviation safety, promoting U.S. leadership in civil supersonic aircraft, and addressing other key aviation industry issues.
“We deeply appreciate the hard work by ICAO, as well as the co-chairs and co-facilitators of CAEP and its working groups, in organizing this session in Montreal,” Bruce said.
