WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States has imposed sanctions on senior Hungarian government official Antal Rogan, citing his involvement in corruption during his tenure as Minister in Charge of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Cabinet Office.
The U.S. Department of State, in a press statement released Tuesday, described Rogan as central to “schemes designed to control strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy.” The statement alleged that Rogan’s actions have enriched himself and his political allies at the expense of the Hungarian people.
“Minister Rogan’s activities exemplify the broader climate of impunity in Hungary, where key elements of the state have been captured by oligarchs and undemocratic actors,” the statement read.
The sanctions, implemented under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, aim to block Rogan from accessing the U.S. financial system and to send a clear message against corruption.
“This designation is intended to ensure the U.S. financial system plays no role in facilitating the corrupt activities of Antal Rogan,” the statement said.
The move aligns with the U.S. Strategy on Countering Corruption, which identifies state capture—a situation where private interests heavily influence a country’s decision-making—as a significant threat.
The Biden administration emphasized the importance of transparency and anti-corruption reforms in Hungary.
“A more transparent Hungary will contribute to a stronger Transatlantic Alliance and a more prosperous Europe,” the statement noted.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury, which enforces sanctions, said the action against Rogan was part of a broader effort to combat corruption and human rights abuses globally.
Hungarian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
