WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Friday that the United States may pull back from efforts to broker peace in Ukraine if current diplomatic proposals fail to gain traction, the State Department said.
In a call with Rutte, Rubio outlined the U.S.-backed peace proposal presented a day earlier to Ukrainian officials in Paris and to Russian officials by phone.
“The Secretary expressed President Trump’s and the United States’ hopes that this proposal will be accepted and will lead to a durable and lasting peace in Ukraine,” said State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
Rubio also delivered a warning: without a clear path forward, the U.S. may step away.
“While our nation has been committed to helping end the war, if a clear path to peace does not emerge soon, the United States will step back from efforts to broker peace,” Bruce said.
