Washington, D.C. – The United States Department of State announced on Monday a new visa restriction policy targeting individuals who may attempt to rig or otherwise undermine Ghana’s democratic process ahead of the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
The U.S. government stressed that these restrictions are intended solely for individuals responsible for actions that threaten Ghana’s electoral integrity, and are not directed at the Ghanaian population or government.
“Ghana has achieved three decades of democratic elections and the peaceful transfer of power between parties – a record to be proud of and a model to cherish,” the Department’s statement noted. “The United States’ readiness to impose visa restrictions if circumstances warrant is an example of our support for the aspirations of all Ghanaians for a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the people.”
Authorized under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the visa restrictions apply to those deemed responsible for actions such as manipulating election results, engaging in voter intimidation, or using violence to interfere with the election. Family members of implicated individuals may also face restrictions under the policy.
The U.S. move underscores its commitment to supporting democratic processes worldwide and ensuring that Ghana’s elections remain free from undue influence.
