WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday extended congratulations to the European Union’s new leadership, highlighting the enduring strength of transatlantic ties.
“We congratulate European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative Kaja Kallas, and the new College of Commissioners as they assume office,” Blinken said in a press statement.
Emphasizing the shared democratic values and robust connections between the U.S. and Europe, Blinken expressed optimism for continued collaboration under the EU’s new leadership.
“The United States and Europe are steadfast partners who share democratic values and enjoy strong people-to-people connections,” he stated.
Blinken reaffirmed the importance of U.S.-EU cooperation in addressing global challenges, from security to economic prosperity.
“When the United States and European Union work together, we foster global security, prosperity, and democratic values that benefit the world,” he said.
The Biden administration’s message comes as António Costa takes the helm of the European Council and Kaja Kallas steps into her role as High Representative. The new leadership is expected to shape the EU’s approach to pressing issues, including climate change, geopolitical stability, and transatlantic trade.
Blinken also acknowledged the EU’s institutional framework, recognizing European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the Union’s member states as integral partners in fostering shared goals.
