WASHINGTON (Chatnewstv.com) — The United States welcomed the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on Iran on Saturday, calling the move a decisive step to hold Tehran accountable for failing to honor its nuclear commitments.
The sanctions, which took effect at 8 p.m. EDT, reactivate six Security Council resolutions — 1696, 1737, 1747, 1803, 1835 and 1929 — that restrict Iran’s nuclear, ballistic missile, and conventional arms activities. They also reimpose global travel bans and asset freezes on designated individuals and entities.
“This evening … the United Nations reimposed sanctions and other restrictions pursuant to six UN Security Council Resolutions … based on Iran’s continuing ‘significant non-performance’ of its nuclear commitments,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
“Their reactivation concludes the snapback process initiated on August 28, 2025, in an act of decisive global leadership on the part of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.”
The Security Council voted September 19 — and reaffirmed the decision on September 26 — to restore the sanctions after European powers triggered the snapback mechanism.
Rubio said the move delivers a clear warning.
“The world will not acquiesce to threats and half measures — and Tehran will be held to account,” he said.
President Donald Trump, while backing the sanctions, has insisted that diplomacy remains possible. “A deal remains the best outcome for the Iranian people and the world,” Rubio said. “For that to happen, Iran must accept direct talks, held in good faith, without stalling or obfuscation.”
Without such talks, Rubio added, it is “incumbent on partners to implement snapback sanctions immediately in order to pressure Iran’s leaders to do what is right for their nation, and best for the safety of the world.”
