LONDON, March 15 (ChATNEWSTV) – British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Saturday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, warning that further delays would only prolong suffering and global instability.
“This morning, I convened the largest, strongest group of countries yet behind a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Starmer said at a press conference. “Now is the moment—let the guns fall silent, let the barbaric attacks on Ukraine stop once and for all.”
The statement follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent commitment to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, a move Starmer described as proof that Ukraine is the “party of peace.” However, he criticized Putin’s hesitation, saying the Russian leader is demanding a “painstaking study” before agreeing to a ceasefire.
“The world needs action—not a study, not empty words and conditions,” Starmer said. “Sooner or later, Putin will have to come to the table.”
Starmer warned that Russia’s continued aggression not only threatens Ukraine but also affects global security, including economic pressures in the UK.
“Russia’s appetite for conflict and chaos undermines our security back home,” he said. “It drives up the cost of living, it drives up energy costs—this matters deeply to the United Kingdom.”
The UK has been at the forefront of international efforts to support Ukraine. On Friday, Starmer announced that military leaders from key allies—including Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan—would meet in the UK on Thursday to develop “strong and robust plans” to support a peace deal and ensure Ukraine’s future security.
The initiative, part of what Starmer calls the “Coalition of the Willing,” aims to increase military aid to Ukraine and tighten economic restrictions on Russia to pressure Putin into negotiations.
“We won’t sit back and wait for Putin to act,” Starmer said. “Instead, we will keep pushing forward.”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has also urged Putin to engage in peace talks, and Starmer stressed that it is now time to turn words into action.
“This is the moment to keep driving toward the outcome we want to see,” Starmer concluded. “A just and lasting peace in Ukraine and lasting security for all of us.”
