United States Announces Additional Humanitarian Assistance for the Palestinian People

EL-ARISH, EGYPT — In a significant move to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Administrator Samantha Power, on behalf of the United States, announced today an additional allocation of over $21 million in humanitarian assistance through USAID. This aid aims to provide crucial support to the approximately 2.2 million people affected by the enduring conflict in the region.

Building on President Biden’s commitment declared on October 18, where $100 million in U.S. humanitarian assistance was pledged, today’s announcement focuses on delivering immediate relief to those in dire need. The funding will be channeled towards the provision of essential hygiene and shelter supplies, food, and market-based assistance, benefiting more than 120,000 individuals.

In addition to addressing basic needs, the announced funding will play a pivotal role in bolstering psychosocial care and critical health services, particularly in Gaza, where a staggering 60 percent of hospitals are currently non-operational. The aid will also contribute to the establishment of a non-governmental organization (NGO)-operated field hospital in Gaza, aiming to fortify the existing health infrastructure by providing in-patient care.

Furthermore, responding to a request from USAID, the Department of Defense (DoD) U.S. Central Command has executed a second airlift, delivering 16.3 metric tons (36,000 pounds) of United Nations medical supplies, winter clothing, and food and nutrition assistance from Jordan to Egypt. This follows a previous DoD airlift on November 28, which transported over 54,000 pounds of UN relief supplies. Additionally, the U.S. has recently dispatched over 500,000 pounds of emergency food supplies to aid civilians in Gaza.

“The United States, in collaboration with regional and global partners, remains committed to tackling the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” stated Administrator Samantha Power. “Our continuous efforts aim to overcome diplomatic and operational challenges, ensuring swift and substantial aid reaches those in need.”

As the situation unfolds, the United States reaffirms its dedication to leading coordinated efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to humanitarian assistance in the face of adversity.
