According to police, the driver initially sped along the A7 motorway before continuing onto federal highway B6, at times driving at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour.
He repeatedly overtook other vehicles despite oncoming traffic, forcing other motorists to swerve to avoid collisions.
The chase continued into a rural area, where the driver attempted to escape through narrow streets, switched off his headlights and eventually fled on foot across open fields.
He was caught several minutes later by a police officer and taken into custody.
Police said initial findings indicate the man does not hold a driving licence and is suspected of drug use. He is under investigation on several charges, including taking part in an illegal motor vehicle race.
