WASHINGTON (Chatnewstv.com) — The United States has taken the significant diplomatic and legal step of removing Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Hasan Khattab from terrorism sanction lists, signaling strong support for the country’s new leadership following the departure of Bashar al-Assad.
The delisting actions, announced Friday, follow the unanimous adoption of a resolution championed by the U.S. at the UN Security Council on November 6.
“The adoption of this resolution sent a strong political signal that further recognizes Syria’s transition to a new chapter,” Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas “Tommy” Pigott said in a press statement.
Al-Sharaa Removed as Global Terrorist
President al-Sharaa—who was previously listed under the name Muhammad al-Jawlani—was delisted by the Secretary of State as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under U.S. Executive Order 13224. Simultaneously, the Department of the Treasury delisted Interior Minister Anas Hasan Khattab as an SDGT.
The U.S. stated the actions were taken “in recognition of the progress demonstrated by the Syrian leadership after the departure of Bashar al-Assad and more than 50 years of repression under the Assad regime.”
The new government, led by President al-Sharaa, is being recognized for its efforts across several key areas:
Locating missing Americans.
Fulfilling commitments on countering terrorism and narcotics.
Eliminating any remnants of chemical weapons.
Promoting regional security and stability.
Advancing an inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process.
The delisting marks a major diplomatic shift by the United States, providing political and economic recognition to the new Syrian government.
