WASHINGTON (Chatnewstv.com) — U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth pressed Nigeria’s top security official Thursday to take “urgent and enduring action” to stop Genocide against Christians in the West African nation during high-level talks at the Pentagon.
Hegseth hosted a Nigerian delegation led by National Security Advisor Mallam Nuhu Ribadu on Thursday to discuss regional security challenges. The discussions focused heavily on combatting jihadist terrorist groups and addressed concerns regarding Christian genocide in Nigeria.
According to a readout provided Friday by Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs, Hegseth emphasized that the U.S. expects to see tangible progress on these issues.
“Secretary Hegseth emphasized the need for Nigeria to demonstrate commitment and take both urgent and enduring action to stop genocide against Christians,” Parnell said in a statement detailing the meeting.
The meeting occurred amidst ongoing security concerns in West Africa, where various extremist groups operate. The Pentagon views Nigeria as a crucial partner in stabilizing the region.
Parnell stated that Hegseth conveyed the Defense Department’s desire to continue security cooperation with Abuja.
“The Secretary conveyed the Department’s desire to work by, with, and through Nigeria to deter and degrade terrorists that threaten the United States,” Parnell said.
