The Nigerian military has dismissed Naval personnel, Seaman Haruna Abbas, from service following his conviction by a General Court Martial for disobeying direct orders. The announcement was made during a press briefing held today at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Seaman Abbas, who was brought before the General Court Martial, pleaded guilty and made an emotional appeal, saying, “Temper justice with mercy.” However, his plea did not sway the court’s decision.
Addressing journalists, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, confirmed that Abbas’s dismissal came after the Chief of Naval Staff ratified the court martial’s judgement. “The judgement was approved after thorough consideration of the case, and Seaman Abbas has been dismissed from service,” Brigadier General Gusau said.
The court martial was instituted by the Defence Headquarters on September 19, 2024, and after the proceedings, the judgement was passed and upheld by the military leadership.
