Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer KC MP expressed deep concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East during his phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation, cautioning that the region was at a “serious risk of miscalculation” and that now was the time for “calm and careful consideration.”
“War is not in anyone’s interests,” Sir Keir stated firmly, urging Iran to refrain from attacking Israel. He underscored the UK’s commitment to an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the swift increase of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Further, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of diplomatic negotiations, adding that these were the only path to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
In addition to regional security, the Prime Minister raised the pressing issue of foreign detainees in Iran, emphasizing the necessity for them to receive adequate medical care.
Both leaders acknowledged the value of maintaining constructive dialogue between the UK and Iran. However, Sir Keir made it clear that such dialogue could only continue if Iran ceased its destabilizing actions, including threats against individuals in the UK and any further support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
