On the occasion of the meeting of the « Weimar Triangle » in La Celle-Saint-Cloud on February 12th, 2024, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of France, Germany, and Poland reaffirmed their determination to inject new energy into their trilateral cooperation.
The meeting, which took place ahead of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion, occurred at a time characterized by ambiguity, unpredictability, uncertainty, and instability in international relations. The ministers emphasized that extraordinary times require extraordinary measures.
Against this backdrop, the ministers expressed their goal to make the European Union more united, stronger, and capable of responding to today’s security challenges. They are committed to a path towards a security and defense union that lives up to their citizens’ expectations. A strong and united NATO was also underscored as a priority.
The ministers recalled their 10-point declaration from 1991, which described the aim of the “Weimar Triangle” as identifying shared fundamental interests regarding Europe’s future. These founding values and interests will remain at the core of their common engagement in an increasingly challenging world.
The ministers pledged to intensify their coordination within the Weimar Triangle, putting it at the service of the EU and making it more instrumental than ever in promoting this ambitious agenda for Europe. They committed to further deepening the cooperation between their respective Foreign Ministries at all levels. The next meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs will take place in Weimar in the early summer.
The ministers also expressed their intention to hold an enlarged « Weimar + Ukraine » meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in the nearest future.
The ministers highlighted that Russia is targeting them with hybrid actions, including disinformation, cyber attacks, and political interference, with the aim to sow division in their democratic societies. They stressed that Russia remains the most significant and direct threat to their security and to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area.
