ABUJA — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has mocked recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying those who once accused him of betrayal have now joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Monday, Wike said the decision of his critics to align with the APC vindicates his earlier political moves.
“I’ve been watching people who said I wanted to destabilise the PDP,” Wike said. “I was accused of working for the APC, and now all of them have joined the APC. So they should commend me for doing a good job for them.”
His comments came after Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, along with former PDP National Youth Leader Sunday Udeh-Okoye, defected to the APC.
Speaking during the flag-off of the Outer Southern Expressway project in Abuja, Wike also praised President Bola Tinubu for policies he said have strengthened the economy. “In the past, governors ran from bank to bank to fund projects. Today, banks are the ones running to states,” he said.
Confirming his resignation from the PDP, Governor Douye Diri said his decision was based on “obvious reasons.” Announcing his exit at Government House, Yenagoa, he said, “After consultation, I formally resign my membership of the PDP. I am not resigning alone; I am here with the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and members of our party in the Assembly.”
Speaker Abraham Ingobere confirmed that 21 of the 24 lawmakers in the Bayelsa Assembly supported the move.
