LAGOS, Nigeria — American streaming sensation iShowSpeed arrived in Lagos on Wednesday, sparking a wave of digital and street-level frenzy as he brought his high-energy “Speed Does Africa” tour to Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The 20-year-old YouTuber, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., touched down in Lagos to celebrate his 21st birthday and explore a city often cited by fans as the perfect match for his raw and unpredictable style. Within hours of his arrival, clips of the streamer navigating the city’s famous traffic while wearing a Nigeria Super Eagles jersey began trending across social media.
“Nigeria jollof is the best,” Watkins declared during a live broadcast shortly after landing, weighing in on the long-standing West African culinary debate while sharing a meal with local creators.
The visit marks the 15th stop of a 28-day tour across 20 African nations. The ambitious project, which launched in late December, aims to showcase the continent’s diverse cultures to a global audience of over 28 million subscribers.
“I love how he embraces the culture as his own,” one fan wrote on a popular Nigerian community forum. “He reminds me of diaspora kids coming home for the first time.”
For many in Lagos, the visit is a significant cultural marker.
“iShowSpeed’s presence in Lagos is more than just a visit; it’s a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in global internet culture,” said Tunde Adekunle, a local digital analyst. “Lagos offers a vibrant backdrop that matches his energy perfectly. We’ve been waiting for this moment.”
Before arriving in Nigeria, Watkins’ tour had already seen him meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto, exploring the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and receiving the traditional name “Logijimako” during an initiation ceremony in Eswatini.
The Lagos leg of the tour is expected to include spontaneous street encounters and collaborations with local influencers, including Nigerian streamer Carter Efe. As Watkins prepares for his birthday celebrations in the city, local authorities and fans alike are bracing for the viral moments the “fast-paced and bold” city is known to provide.
