WASHINGTON — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Donald Trump on Thursday, describing the session as a “productive and substantive” step toward reinforcing Ukraine’s aerial defenses as the conflict with Russia continues.
The meeting focused heavily on technical cooperation between the two nations’ teams and the urgent need for more advanced missile systems to protect Ukrainian airspace.
“The documents are now even better prepared,” Zelenskyy said in a statement following the meeting. “We also spoke today about air defense for Ukraine.”
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for a previous package of air defense missiles provided by the U.S. but used the visit to formally request additional equipment to counter ongoing Russian strikes.
“I thanked him for the previous package of air defense missiles and asked for an additional one,” Zelenskyy said. “Protecting lives, our resilience, and our joint diplomatic efforts.”
The Ukrainian leader also referenced his recent diplomatic outreach across the American political spectrum, noting that his previous discussions with President Donald Trump had contributed to the current strength of Ukraine’s sky protection. He expressed optimism that the latest talks with the Biden administration would “reinforce it further as well.”
The White House has not yet released a formal list of new munitions included in the requested package, but Zelenskyy emphasized that communication between U.S. and Ukrainian teams is now occurring on a “practically every day” basis to streamline military aid.
The meeting comes as Ukraine continues to lobby Western allies for more robust defensive capabilities to safeguard its energy infrastructure and civilian centers from long-range drone and missile attacks.
