KYIV, Ukraine (CHATNEWSTV) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday urged the Vatican to support efforts to secure the release of Ukrainians held in Russian captivity and push for a just and lasting peace.
In a phone call with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the Holy See’s “prayers for Ukraine and peace” and its role in helping return Ukrainian children deported by Russia.
“Our state is grateful for the Vatican’s assistance and is counting on its support in freeing Ukrainians held in Russian prisons and camps,” Zelenskyy said, noting that Ukraine had provided a list of detainees to the Holy See.
Zelenskyy called for an immediate exchange of prisoners and an “unconditional 30-day ceasefire” as urgent steps toward peace. “Ukraine is ready to take these steps, as the Ukrainian people want peace more than anyone,” he said, but accused Russia of “deliberately setting conditions to prolong the war and undermine diplomatic efforts.”
He also wished Pope Francis a speedy recovery and thanked the Vatican for its willingness to help mediate peace efforts.
