U.S. Announces Support for Earthquake-Hit Morocco

The U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power, today expressed the United States’ resolute support for the earthquake-affected communities in Morocco. She began by extending condolences to the people of Morocco, acknowledging the profound impact of the catastrophic earthquake that struck the country on September 8, marking the most devastating seismic event in over a century. Administrator Power emphasized the gravity of the situation, with thousands of lives lost and numerous individuals injured or urgently requiring shelter and essential aid.

Administrator Power reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to aiding the Government of Morocco in its efforts to facilitate recovery and provide critical humanitarian assistance to those affected by the disaster.

Following the earthquake, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) acted swiftly by deploying an assessment team to Morocco. Their primary mission was to collaborate with local responders, assess the situation, and identify pressing humanitarian needs. Based on these early assessments and in alignment with Morocco’s leadership in responding to the tragedy, Administrator Power announced that the United States, through USAID, would allocate up to $1 million in initial humanitarian assistance. This financial support is intended to empower on-ground organizations to deliver emergency food aid, healthcare services, shelter, and essential mental health and psychosocial resources as part of the Moroccan-led response.

Administrator Power also disclosed that the United States is actively sharing specialized technical expertise directly with the Moroccan government to bolster its ongoing emergency response efforts. The U.S. government stands ready to provide further assistance if requested by Moroccan authorities.

In the wake of the earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks, Administrator Power praised the extraordinary acts of courage and compassion exhibited by individuals and communities. She highlighted neighbors uniting to swiftly deliver food and water to displaced families, the tireless efforts of first responders in searching for survivors, and the selflessness of citizens waiting in long lines to donate blood.

Administrator Power expressed USAID’s deep appreciation for the outpouring of generosity and compassion from individuals eager to support Morocco during these trying times. She encouraged those interested in contributing to consider making cash donations to reputable organizations actively engaged with affected communities, as these organizations possess a deep understanding of the most pressing needs. For comprehensive information on how to extend assistance to the people of Morocco, Administrator Power directed concerned individuals to visit the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI).
