In what appears to be the early stages of the 2024 governorship race in Ondo State, sources reveal that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has initiated consultations with key party leaders.
Recent reports suggest that Governor Aiyedatiwa visited the Lagos home of influential political figure President Bola Tinubu, allegedly to intimate him about his intention to run in the upcoming election. However, aides to the governor insist that the visit was solely to officially inform President Tinubu of the recent passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, quashing any speculations of political discussions.
A close aide emphasized that it is premature for the governor to engage in political maneuvering at this stage, suggesting that the primary purpose of the visit was to convey condolences and discuss the formalities surrounding Governor Akeredolu’s demise.
Meanwhile, Babajide Akeredolu, the son of the late governor, separately visited President Tinubu to brief him on the burial arrangements for his father, further complicating the narrative.
Earlier, Governor Aiyedatiwa had paid a visit to the Akeredolu family in Ibadan, meeting with the late governor’s wife, Betty, and other family members. Subsequently, he left for Lagos to engage with President Tinubu.
As the political landscape in Ondo State begins to stir with these developments, it remains to be seen whether Governor Aiyedatiwa’s consultations will evolve into a full-fledged bid for the governorship in 2024.
