Prominent Lagos Muslim Leader, Shaykh Abdul-Afis Aṣamu Abou, Passes Away at 101

The Baba Adinni of Lagos and Chairman of the Executive Council of Lagos Central Mosque, Shaykh Abdul-Afis Aṣamu Abou, has passed away. His Janazah (burial) is scheduled to take place today, Wednesday, January 10, at 2 pm in the Lagos Central Mosque.

The late scholar recently led the Executive Council of the Lagos Central Mosque in a significant effort to reclaim the land of the Mosque at Dodan Barracks.

Condolences are pouring in for the departed leader, reflecting the profound impact he had on the community. Among those expressing their grief is President Bola Tinubu, who received the news with a heavy heart.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the Muslim community in Lagos, and the Lagos State Government. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President celebrated the inspiring legacy of service, duty, and sacrifice left by Baba Abou, who passed away at the age of 101. The President acknowledged the late scholar’s extraordinary contributions to the Muslim Ummah, Lagos State, and beyond.

“Baba dedicated his life to the service of the people. He lived a full life guided by the highest and noblest moral codes. He was a fine example for all of us. He will be sorely missed. We should take solace in Baba’s legacy and uphold his values of honesty, dignity, and sacrifice,” President Tinubu expressed.

The President concluded his statement with a heartfelt prayer, stating, “President Tinubu prayed that Almighty Allah grant Baba the highest station in Al-Jannah Firdaus.” The passing of Shaykh Abdul-Afis Aṣamu Abou leaves a void in the religious and civic fabric of Lagos, and his legacy will undoubtedly be remembered and cherished by many.
