EU Council Adopts €15 Million Assistance Measure to Strengthen Ivoirian Armed Forces

BRUSSELS, Belgium, April 29, 2024 – The Council of the European Union has adopted an assistance measure worth €15 million under the European Peace Facility to bolster the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Côte d’Ivoire. This support aims to secure areas close to land borders and counter non-state armed groups destabilising the country and the broader West Africa region.

The EU’s proposed assistance will provide equipment not designed to deliver lethal force. This move is intended to upgrade the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities of the Air Forces of Côte d’Ivoire. The acquisition of communication and data transmission equipment and unmanned aerial systems forms a significant part of this upgrade.

In addition to enhancing technological capabilities, the assistance will also strengthen the logistics and security of military units deployed in the northern areas of Côte d’Ivoire. This will be achieved through the provision of multi-purpose vehicles and personal protective equipment.

To ensure the full effectiveness of the support and draw the maximum benefit from it, the delivery of the equipment will be accompanied by relevant tactical and on-the-job training. This comprehensive approach underscores the EU’s commitment to peace and stability in the region, demonstrating a strategic investment in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Ivoirian Armed Forces.
