Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington, has sparked controversy with his recent advice to Nigerian men, urging them to avoid marrying women from the South East region of the country. In a video shared on his social media page, the rapper labeled Igbo women as “not great for marriage.”
Speed Darlington, known for his outspoken and often provocative statements, claimed that Igbo women are “greedy, proud, and promiscuous.” He drew parallels between Igbo women and black American women, alleging that they are never satisfied with what they are given.
In the now-viral video, Speed Darlington said, “This message is for my brothers who are planning to marry. Listen to me, you are not more exposed than I am. My job makes me travel a lot. So, I think I’m very qualified to give this advice.
“Avoid Igbo girls, they’re not great for marriage. I am an Igbo guy and I am telling you about our girls. Avoid Igbo girls, they’re very greedy and unappreciative. They behave like black American women; nothing you give a black American lady is enough.
“Igbo women are also very proud unlike Yoruba and Hausa women. I wonder how someone is going to live with such a braggadocious woman. They’re the number one prostitutes in Nigeria. Most social media feminists are Igbo women.”
Curiously, this advice comes after Speed Darlington had previously listed fluency in the Igbo language as a criterion for him to marry a woman.
Following the circulation of his video on social media, many Nigerians flooded his comment section to criticize him, accusing him of projecting his frustrations onto Igbo women. His remarks have ignited a heated debate about stereotypes and respect within the Nigerian community.
