Former EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde Passes Away at 61

Abuja, 26 May 2024 – Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. According to family sources, Lamorde died in Egypt on Sunday morning, where he had gone for medical treatment.

Lamorde, who was well-known for his role in Nigeria’s fight against corruption, first assumed leadership of the EFCC in an acting capacity on November 3, 2011. This followed the removal of his predecessor, Farida Waziri, by former President Goodluck Jonathan. His appointment was later confirmed by the Senate on February 15, 2012.

A native of Mubi in Adamawa State, Lamorde’s educational journey began at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He joined the Nigerian Police in 1986 and had a distinguished career, eventually retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021.

Throughout his tenure at the EFCC, Lamorde was known for his dedication to tackling corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria. His efforts earned him respect and recognition both locally and internationally.

The news of his passing has been met with an outpouring of condolences and tributes from colleagues, friends, and the broader Nigerian public, all of whom remember him for his contributions to the nation’s law enforcement and anti-corruption efforts.

Details of his funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
