EU Strengthens Moldova’s Air Defence with €9 Million Assistance Measure

Today, the European Council adopted a significant assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) aimed at enhancing the air defence capabilities of the Republic of Moldova. The measure, valued at €9 million, will finance short-range interceptors for the Moldovan Armed Forces. This initiative follows a €41 million assistance measure from April 2024, aimed at modernising Moldova’s defence capacities in mobility, air surveillance, electronic warfare, and logistics.

“With this latest measure, we are reinforcing Moldova’s ability to protect its critical infrastructure and civilians,” stated Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. “Our support is crucial in helping Moldova meet EU standards and improve interoperability with EU forces.”

Building on four previous EPF assistance measures since 2021, this new action increases the total EPF support to Moldova to €137 million. Prior measures included €40 million each in 2022 and 2023, and an initial €7 million in December 2021.

The EU’s commitment comes amid ongoing challenges posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. “The EU stands firmly with Moldova in addressing the security challenges exacerbated by Russia’s destabilising activities,” Borrell added.

The European Peace Facility, established in March 2021, finances actions in military and defence areas under the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Its goal is to prevent conflict, preserve peace, and strengthen international security. The EPF enables the EU to support third states and regional and international organisations in enhancing their military and defence capabilities.
