FG Holds Emergency Meeting, Appeals For Calm Amidst Planned Nationwide Protests

Abuja, Nigeria, July 23, 2024 /ChatNewsTV/ — In response to rising public discontent and a planned nationwide protest against economic hardship, key members of Nigeria’s government, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume and National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, convened an urgent meeting with the country’s ministers. The closed-door session, held on Wednesday, saw the attendance of over 40 ministers from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

Prominent figures at the meeting included Nyesom Wike (Minister of the Federal Capital Territory), Yusuf Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Zephaniah Jisalo (Minister of Special Duties), Tahir Mamman (Minister of Education), and Abubakar Bagudu (Minister of Budget and Planning). Other notable attendees were Wale Edun (Minister of Finance), Mohammed Idris (Minister of Information), Bello Matawalle (Minister of Defence), and David Umahi (Minister of Works).

Following the meeting, Information Minister Mohammed Idris addressed the media, urging Nigerians to exercise patience with the government as it works to alleviate the economic challenges facing the country. “We understand the frustrations and concerns of our youths and all Nigerians,” Idris stated. “However, we plead for more time to implement our strategies aimed at addressing these issues. The government is engaging with all stakeholders to ensure a positive resolution for the benefit of the entire nation.”

The planned protest, which has gained significant traction on social media under the banner ‘EndBadGovernance,’ is scheduled to take place across all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in August. The protest organizers, who remain anonymous, have called for action in response to soaring food prices and a severe economic downturn, exacerbated by the government’s recent removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates.

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on Tuesday, appealing to citizens to reconsider the planned protests. “We are aware of the difficulties faced by many Nigerians, but we assure you that measures are being taken to address these economic challenges. Let us work together in the spirit of unity and progress,” the President remarked.

As the date for the protest approaches, the government continues to seek dialogue with concerned groups, urging restraint and cooperation during this challenging period for Nigeria.
