United States President, Joe Biden, has reacted to the emergence of his Deputy, Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.
Harris effectively secured the nomination on Friday and will now face off with Republican candidate, Donald Trump during November elections.
The US Vice President secured the Democratic nomination after receiving the majority of votes — at least 2,350 — from her party’s delegates, just one day after voting opened.
The Democratic National Committee held a livestream video hosted by Biden campaign aides and DNC chairman Jaime Harrison to mark the occasion.
Speaking after she passed the delegate threshold, Harris said, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States.”
In the two weeks since Biden ended his re-election bid, Kamala has smashed fundraising records and erased the polling leads Trump had built over the president.
Taking to his X page after her nomination, Biden tweeted, “I couldn’t be prouder,”
With Harris’ emergence as Democratic candidate for the upcoming US presidential election, she has become the first Black and Asian woman ever to secure a major party’s nomination.
The 59-year-old will be officially crowned at a Chicago convention later this month.
