Sierra Leone’s President Bio Champions Agriculture and Food Security in State Opening Address

Freetown, August 7, 2024 — President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone today delivered a compelling State Opening of Parliament Address, underscoring the critical role of agriculture and food security in ensuring national stability and prosperity.

In his speech, President Bio emphasized that agriculture is not just about providing sustenance but is a fundamental pillar of national resilience, economic growth, and social well-being. He warned of the risks associated with food scarcity, asserting that “without the ability to feed our people, we risk sitting atop a volatile precipice poised for unrest and turmoil.” He highlighted the truth behind the adage, “a hungry man is an angry man,” linking food security directly to national security.

President Bio reiterated the importance of investing in agriculture, stating, “Prioritising investments in agriculture can mitigate food price volatility, enhance our resilience to external shocks, and advance our journey towards food self-sufficiency.” He called for increased investment in the sector, which he believes will generate jobs, reduce reliance on food imports, boost export earnings from cash crops, and drive sustainable economic growth.

“Our vision for a robust food production system is private sector-led, transforming every aspect of our agricultural value chains,” President Bio declared. He highlighted his government’s focus on overcoming key challenges in agriculture, including finance, soil fertility, water management, mechanisation, quality seed input, infrastructure, and the integration of technology and research to boost productivity.

The address took place at the Sierra Leone Parliament, drawing a large and diverse audience that included parliamentarians, government ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, local leaders, and a substantial number of citizens. The enthusiastic turnout underscored the significance of the President’s message and the collective interest in the country’s governance and future direction.

The event was marked by a sense of anticipation and optimism, with President Bio’s speech well-received by the attendees. The President detailed his administration’s achievements, ranging from economic reforms to infrastructural developments, and laid out ambitious plans for the coming years, focusing on sustainable development, improved public services, and enhanced governance.
