Defense Minister Orders Investigation Into Nigerian Navy’s Alleged Six-Year Detention Of Seaman Abbas

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has acknowledged a video circulating online, alleging the unjust incarceration of a Naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, who has reportedly been detained for six years.

The DHQ, in a statement signed by Tukur Gusau, Brigadier General, Director Defence Information, on Sunday night, reassured the public of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

“The military court-martial process, though meticulous, ensures fairness, equal opportunity, and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law,” stated the DHQ.

Reacting to the claims, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” the DHQ assured.

Meanwhile, the public has been urged to remain cautious and avoid spreading unverified information.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will ensure a speedy and transparent investigation,” the DHQ concluded.

The statement reads, “The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has taken notice of a circulating video clip alleging the unjust incarceration of a Naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, for six years.

“The DHQ wishes to assure the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law. The military court-martial process, though meticulous, ensures fairness, equal opportunity, and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law.”

In another related development, Minister of State for Defence Bello Muhammad Matawalle has ordered an immediate investigation into the detention of Seaman Haruna.

This action follows an appeal by the officer’s wife, Mrs. Hussaina Haruna, who called for justice regarding her husband’s case.

In response to the growing public concern, Matawalle, through his Personal Assistant on Media Ahmad Dan-Wudil, emphasized the government’s commitment to justice, stating: “Our armed forces are built on the pillars of honour, discipline, and justice. No officer serving this great nation should be subjected to undue hardship or wrongful treatment.”

“The case of Seaman Abbas will be thoroughly investigated, and the truth will be uncovered,” Matawalle said, reassuring the public that the matter will be handled with the “utmost seriousness.”

The investigation will involve all relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Navy, to establish the facts surrounding the detention of Seaman Abbas. Matawalle reiterated that every military officer deserves fair treatment, stressing that Seaman Haruna’s rights will be protected throughout the process.

“Any breach of protocol will be addressed promptly and decisively,” he said.

He further assured that the ministry remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that neither officers nor civilians are subjected to harassment or unfair treatment.

Matawalle urged all stakeholders and the public to remain calm as the investigation unfolds, stating, “We remain committed to upholding the integrity of our military and the rights of every individual under the law.”
