European Partners Launch €8 Million Project to Decarbonize Maritime Transport

HELSINKI (ChatnewsTV) — A consortium of 11 European partners has launched a groundbreaking project aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence and cutting emissions in maritime transport. The project, known as MARPOWER (Efficient Zero-Emissions Gas Turbine POWER System for MARitime Transport), is funded by the European Union with nearly €8 million and is expected to run for two years.

The initiative officially kicked off in September 2024 at Finland’s LUT University and seeks to develop a novel energy conversion system capable of utilizing sustainable fuels, including green methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia. This advanced system would require minimal modifications to existing combustion systems, making it both technically and economically feasible for integration into current maritime vessels.

“This project represents a crucial step toward decarbonizing maritime transport,” said a spokesperson from LUT University, which is coordinating the effort. “By developing a gas turbine combustor for alternative fuels, we aim to significantly reduce emissions and contribute to cleaner oceans.”

A key feature of MARPOWER will be its flexibility. The system is designed to accommodate a range of alternative fuels while ensuring high performance and efficiency, making it viable for use on cargo and cruise ships. A digital twin model, which creates a virtual replica of the energy conversion system, will be used to simulate and optimize its integration into ship propulsion and power generation systems.

The project will also develop prototypes for critical components, including the combustion chamber and high-pressure shaft system, which will be tested to optimize performance. To further ensure the system’s efficiency, an active magnetic bearing system supported two-shaft gas turbine with a bottoming cycle will be developed, maximizing power generation.

A key focus is ensuring the system remains competitive. “It’s not just about sustainability; it’s about creating a solution that is both technically advanced and economically practical for widespread adoption,” explained one of the project’s engineers.

The MARPOWER project brings together expertise from six countries, including Finland’s Aurelia Turbines and Alfa Laval Aalborg, Italy’s Politecnico di Milano and Rina Consulting, Spain’s University of Vigo, Germany’s Aerospace Center (DLR), and France’s Chantiers de L’Atlantique.

The team aims to revolutionize the maritime industry by offering an efficient and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. “The results of this project could transform maritime transport, making it cleaner and more sustainable for future generations,” the spokesperson added.
