U.S. Reports Record Number of International Students as International Education Week Kicks Off

WASHINGTON (ChatnewsTV) — The U.S. Department of State has reported a record number of international students studying in the United States, highlighting the growing appeal of U.S. higher education as the nation celebrates International Education Week (IEW) from November 18-22, 2024.

According to the annual Open Doors Report, released today by the Department of State in collaboration with the Institute of International Education (IIE), more than 1.12 million international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities during the 2023-2024 academic year. This represents a new high for international student enrollment, reinforcing the U.S.’s position as the top global destination for education.

“The record number of international students in the U.S. underscores our commitment to making America the world’s top destination for study,” said U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“International education strengthens global ties and enhances mutual understanding across cultures.”

The economic impact of these students is also significant, contributing over $50 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023, according to the Department of Commerce. The Open Doors data, now in its 75th year, provides critical insights into trends in international student mobility and highlights the ongoing importance of educational exchange.

Throughout IEW, the Department of State, alongside the Department of Education, is emphasizing the benefits of international education. This year’s theme, “Explore,” encourages students, scholars, and institutions to explore educational opportunities that will equip them with the skills to succeed globally.

“IEW is a time to celebrate the value of international exchange and the diverse perspectives it brings to classrooms and communities across the United States,” said the Department of State in a statement.

In addition to promoting educational exchange, the Department will focus on programs that recruit international students to study in the U.S., highlight language-learning opportunities, and celebrate the contributions of exchange program alumni. More than 1,700 high school students from programs like the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX), and Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange & Study (YES) will also engage in cultural exchanges across the country, sharing their experiences with local schools and communities.
