Zuma Film Festival Highlights Nigeria’s Cinema as a Catalyst for Change — Ali Nuhu

Agency Report

Dr Ali Nuhu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Film Corporation, NFC, says Zuma International Film Festival showcases a transformative power of cinema due to its economic impact of past editions.

Mr Nuhu stated this at the opening of the annual Zuma Film Festival (ZUFF) on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that such economic impact had increased interest of stakeholders in Nigeria’s film industry to participate in the festival.

The 14th edition of the film festival with the theme;”Digital Renaissance: Embracing the Future,” aims at promoting Nigeria’s cultural and creative economy.

Mr Nuhu said the event does not only celebrate the brilliance of filmmakers and movies that shaped our narratives, it also ignites the spark of creativity that lights the path to our collective future.

According to him, Cinema, from the Nigerian perspective, is more than just a form of entertainment.

“ It is a profound collective and globally shared humanitarian activity that celebrates cultural heritages and promotes social change,“ he said.

He said that cinema also amplifies diverse voices and perspectives, global films, including those from Nigeria, which had become powerful instruments for fostering domestic and cross-border relations and development.

“Our unwavering commitment to hosting this festival annually is a testament to the belief in the transformative power of cinema.

“The support from our domestic and international partners has been instrumental in achieving the festival’s objectives.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our partners, sponsors, and enablers who have made the 2024 edition possible.

“With your continued support, we will strive to deliver on the festival’s objectives with each edition.

“Our collective efforts align with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s vision to position the creative industry as a key element in the nation’s developmental strategies and master plan,” Nuhu said.

He said the theme of this year’s edition highlights the pivotal role of digital technology in bridging the gap between Nigerian filmmakers and global audiences.

”It is a call to adapt to the changing landscape of digital media, harness the power of technology to tell our stories, showcase our culture, as well as promote our values.

” By doing so, we can truly embrace the future because digital technology has not only democratised filmmaking, but given a voice to the voiceless.

“But it has also expanded the horizons of our imagination, allowing us to explore new realms and push the boundaries of our creativity,” he added.

Mr Nuhu further said that the emergence of this theme was intentional, as it reflected its relevance in today’s digital age.

“To our filmmakers, I say this your work is more than just entertainment. It is a powerful tool for change, a mirror reflecting the realities of our society

“Your dedication, passion and relentless pursuit of excellence inspire us all. You are the torchbearers of our stories; we see the world not just as it is, but as it ought to be.

“Throughout this festival, we will explore various dimensions of the Digital Renaissance theme, from the latest trends in digital filmmaking to the opportunities and challenges of digital content distribution,” he said.

He said the event would give participants the opportunity to experience films from Nigeria and around the world, reflecting the richness and diversity of cultures through the power of storytelling.

”We have also curated film industry sessions on critical issues related to film content production, distribution and exhibition, led by reputable Nigerian and global film experts.

“The 2024 festival aims to support the broad objectives of the 8-Point Agenda of the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, making the destination of Nigeria in 2030 a reality.

“We extend our gratitude to our partners, both governmental and corporate, who have tirelessly promoted the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry through the Zuma platform.

“I encourage our guests present in this festival to utilise the numerous opportunities of this festival to network and connect,“ he said.

According to him, the Jury’s task, undertaken with the highest sense of responsibility and dignity, will ensure that our awardees and winners truly deserve their recognitions and honors.

Also speaking, Alexander Williams, High Commissioner of Jamaica, said Jamaicans were pleased to participate for the first time in the film festival, as well as screening their two films on Monday.

According to him, the festival presents an opportunity for guests to see Jamaica as a destination for film with a vibrant film industry.

”So, there are many areas in which we will collaborate with Nigeria regarding films. We are so pleased to see the talent of your Nigerian films in Jamaica”.

NAN reports that Vice President Kashim Shettima will deliver a lecture on “Cinematic Ecosystem: Redefining Africa Cinema,” at the festival.
