UK Invests in Green Energy for Africa, Aims to Power Millions

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The United Kingdom has announced a major initiative to expand electricity access across Africa, aiming to connect millions to renewable energy sources as part of its Plan for Change.

“Connecting the continent to clean, reliable energy is vital,” said Lord Collins, UK Minister for Africa, at the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Tanzania. “UK support is helping ensure millions get the access they need to prosper through planet-friendly solutions.”

A new £5.3 million partnership between British International Investment (BII) and UK cleantech company MOPO will bring renewable energy to over one million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. MOPO’s solar-powered hubs and battery rental systems are expected to transform energy access in remote regions where over 80% of the population lacks electricity.

Additionally, the UK will provide £8.5 million to the African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA). The funding will promote solar mini-grids, clean cooking solutions, and energy-efficient projects while mobilizing private sector investment.

Rachel Kyte, the UK’s Special Representative for Climate, highlighted the initiative’s broader goals. “Reliable, affordable, and clean energy is the cornerstone of economic growth and development,” she said. “Helping end energy poverty supports growth, builds resilience, and addresses climate change.”

The Mission 300 initiative, supported by the UK, aims to provide electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030. Currently, half of Africa’s population—600 million people—lacks access to electricity.

Lord Collins emphasized the UK’s leadership in clean energy innovation and partnerships with African nations. “This investment not only addresses energy poverty but also deepens our partnerships and creates opportunities for growth and jobs for British businesses,” he added.

BII CEO Leslie Maasdorp praised the collaboration. “Our investment in MOPO demonstrates how early-stage solutions can expand energy access for more Africans,” he said.
