San Jose, California (dpa) – Californian Artificial Intelligence start-up OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced on Thursday that it would open its first office in Germany, located in Munich.
Germany is one of the world’s leading countries in terms of AI usage, according to OpenAI.
Munich already hosts the German headquarters of US tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft and Intel.
ChatGPT is the chatbot that triggered the hype surrounding AI.
OpenAI sees Germany as one of its most important markets, with the country having the highest number of ChatGPT users in Europe and ranking among the top five globally. The number of users in Germany tripled last year alone, according to the company.
Germany also leads Europe in the number of users who have taken out paid subscriptions in the service and ranks among the top three countries worldwide. For corporate customers with paid accounts, Germany is among the top three countries outside the US.
OpenAI reports over 300 million weekly active users worldwide, with more than 1 million paying business customers.
The company has yet to announce the exact address of its Munich office but plans to begin hiring soon. OpenAI also aims to strengthen its collaboration with German universities through its presence in the country.
