Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi has shared his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities facing Africa after a weekend of meetings in Kigali, Rwanda. In a tweets on Monday, Obi spoke about his discussions with key figures, focusing on how African countries can boost productivity and address pressing issues like food insecurity and economic growth.
“I always say our productivity is too low,” Obi tweeted. “Nigeria must move from consumption to production.”
One of the most insightful moments of his trip came during a conversation with former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. “When working with the Chinese, we saw they could produce six to seven times more than we could,” Desalegn told Obi. “So we took action. Today, the average Ethiopian produces 60-70% of what the Chinese can do.” This, Obi noted, showed how important it is for African countries to focus on improving their production capacities.
A key highlight for Obi was his meeting with Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame, known for his commitment to effective leadership and resource management. “President Kagame is dedicated to wisely managing resources and serving his people,” Obi said. “His leadership is a great example for Africa.”
Obi also attended the Sherrie Silver Foundation’s “The Silver Gala,” where he saw firsthand the potential of Africa’s youth. “Looking around the room, I saw a continent full of energy and innovation,” Obi tweeted. “With the right leadership, Africa can rise by investing in the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of our young people.”
Obi ended his trip feeling hopeful about Africa’s future. “My experience in Kigali has strengthened my belief that a new Nigeria is possible, and that Africa is on the rise and unstoppable,” he concluded.
