ABUJA, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has directed the Nigeria Police to transfer the casefile of 114 minor EndBadGovernance protesters to his office. The protesters were arrested and arraigned on charges including treason, following the recent anti-government demonstrations.
In a statement released Friday evening, Mr. Fagbemi revealed his office’s interest in reviewing the case to make an informed decision. He instructed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) to expedite the case’s review and seek an earlier court date.
“It has just come to my notice that the police have arraigned those arrested in connection with the EndBadGovernance protest for various offences, including treason,” Mr. Fagbemi said. “There are some issues my office will need to look into regarding the matter to enable me to take an informed decision.”
Mr. Fagbemi acknowledged the court’s decision to remand the defendants and adjourn the case to January, emphasizing that his office does not have the authority to alter the court’s orders. However, he assured swift action by instructing the police to hand over the casefile to the DPPF by Saturday, November 2, 2024.
“I have further directed the DPPF to immediately put machinery in motion for consideration of the court to bring the adjournment date forward,” he added.
