TALLINN, Estonia (CHATNEWSTV) — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have officially synchronized their electricity grids with the Continental European frequency band, marking a decisive step in strengthening energy security and reducing reliance on Russia.
“This is an important step to strengthen our energy security, further mitigating dependency on Russia,” Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said Sunday on X. “Synchronization was well planned and executed. Thankful to everyone who worked for this.”
The move, years in the making, severs the Baltic nations from the Russian-controlled BRELL energy ring, a legacy of the Soviet era. The transition ensures greater energy stability within the European Union and aligns the three nations with Western infrastructure.
Yoko Alender, Estonian minister for Climate (Reform), hailed the shift as “The Baltic States’ Energy Independence Day.”
EU officials have long pushed for the synchronization to reduce the Kremlin’s leverage over Baltic energy supplies. The process was accelerated following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which prompted a broader European effort to cut energy ties with Moscow.
The successful transition underscores the region’s push for energy independence amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
