WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed U.S. support for Venezuela’s democratic transition during a call with President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia and opposition leader María Corina Machado on Sunday.
“The United States remains steadfast in supporting the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed at the ballot box and in advocating for the peaceful restoration of democracy,” Blinken said, according to a statement from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Blinken praised the resilience of Venezuela’s democratic opposition and commended the Venezuelan people for their commitment to democracy despite years of political repression under President Nicolás Maduro.
“We stand in solidarity with the international community in condemning Maduro’s anti-democratic actions,” Blinken said.
The call comes as Venezuela prepares for a significant political transition following González Urrutia’s election victory. Blinken also reiterated the U.S. demand for the release of all unjustly detained political prisoners, underscoring Washington’s commitment to human rights in the region.
The Secretary’s outreach highlights U.S. backing for a peaceful and democratic resolution to Venezuela’s political crisis, which has drawn international scrutiny in recent years.
