BRASILIA, Brazil (CHATNEWSTV) — The Brazilian government, exercising its pro tempore presidency of BRICS, announced Friday the formal admission of Nigeria as the 9th partner country of the influential grouping.
“Nigeria’s inclusion marks a significant step in strengthening South-South cooperation and advancing the reform of global governance,” Brazil said in a statement, applauding Nigeria’s decision to join.
Nigeria becomes the ninth partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The partner-country category was established at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
With Africa’s largest population and one of its leading economies, Nigeria’s participation underscores the continent’s growing influence in global affairs. Brazil emphasized that the West African nation shares key priorities with BRICS, including fostering economic collaboration and addressing global inequalities.
“Nigeria’s active role in promoting equitable development aligns perfectly with BRICS’ vision for a multipolar world,” the statement added.
BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been expanding its outreach to countries in the Global South, seeking to build a broader coalition to challenge traditional Western dominance in global institutions.
