Cesare Onestini Appointed New Director-General for Organisational Development at EU Council

BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — The Secretary-General of the European Council, Thérèse Blanchet, announced Wednesday that Cesare Onestini will take over as Director-General for Organisational Development and Services (DG ORG) starting January 1, 2025. Onestini, who currently serves as the Director-General for Agriculture, Fisheries, Social Affairs, and Health, will assume his new post upon the retirement of the incumbent, William Shapcott.

Blanchet expressed confidence in Onestini’s ability to lead the Directorate-General, which oversees critical support services for the Council, including human resources, logistics, finance, and security. “Cesare Onestini has a proven track record of policy development and leadership. His experience will be invaluable as he transitions to managing organisational development and services,” said Blanchet.

Onestini, an Italian national, brings a rich background in education, policy, and international relations to his new role. He previously served as the Director of the European Training Foundation and has held various high-profile positions within the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission.

Commenting on his new appointment, Onestini said, “I am honored to take on this responsibility and continue working towards the efficient functioning of the General Secretariat of the Council. Supporting the development of our institution is a priority, especially in such dynamic times.”

Onestini will continue to act as the Director-General in his current role until a successor is named. His experience across several sectors within the EU, from trade to transportation and education, has earned him a reputation for strong leadership and effective management.

The DG ORG plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the General Secretariat by managing protocol, logistics, and safety measures, among other services. As Onestini prepares to take over, the Council’s senior leadership expressed optimism about the new direction the Directorate-General will take under his stewardship.

Onestini will be replacing William Shapcott, who has led DG ORG for several years and will retire after a distinguished career in public service.
