Court Halts Distribution of Farotimi’s Book, Orders Royalties Seized

ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order stopping the production and distribution of “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” a book authored by embattled lawyer Dele Farotimi, following a suit filed by legal icon Afe Babalola.

The court also directed the seizure of royalties and instructed platforms such as Amazon and local bookstores to cease selling the book, which has gained international traction, topping Amazon’s bestseller list in global politics.

The order, referenced as suit no. CV/5372/24, was filed by Kehinde Ogunwumiju, the head of Mr. Babalola’s chambers, and dated December 6, 2024.

“A[n] order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendant/respondent… including Amazon Online Bookstore, Rovingheights Bookstore, Booksellers Bookstore, and others from further publishing, selling, or circulating physical or digital copies of the book,” the order stated.

The controversial publication alleges judicial manipulation by Mr. Babalola to secure favorable outcomes for his clients, sparking heated debates since its release.

Legal experts have expressed mixed reactions to the court’s decision. While some laud it as a necessary measure to protect reputations, others view it as an infringement on freedom of expression.
