EU Council Approves List of New Commission Members for 2024–2029

BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — The European Council on Thursday adopted the list of candidates proposed for appointment as members of the European Commission, following an agreement with the President-elect of the Commission. This group of 25 officials will serve until October 31, 2029, and the decision marks a significant step in shaping the executive branch of the European Union.

The proposed list features prominent names from across the European Union block, including Austria’s Magnus Brunner, Portugal’s Maria Luís Casanova Morgado Dias de Albuquerque, and Slovakia’s Maroš Šefčovič.

One notable appointment is Kaja Kallas of Estonia, who was previously appointed High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy by the European Council in July.

Among the other members on the list are Valdis Dombrovskis from Latvia, Raffaele Fitto from Italy, and Teresa Ribera Rodríguez from Spain. The proposal also includes Christophe Hansen of Luxembourg, Dan Jørgensen from Denmark, and Sweden’s Jessika Roswall, among others.

The list will now be forwarded to the European Parliament, which must give its consent before the new Commission can be formally appointed. The appointments will then be confirmed by the European Council through a qualified majority vote.

The new Commission will play a central role in advancing the EU’s policy agenda, including handling foreign policy, trade negotiations, and addressing ongoing challenges like the war in Ukraine and economic recovery efforts post-pandemic.

Under Article 17(7) of the Treaty on European Union, the Council, in agreement with the President-elect of the Commission, adopts the list of candidates for the Commission. This list is subject to approval by the European Parliament, after which the Commission can begin its official duties.

Once published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the decision will take full effect.
