WARSAW, Poland (CHATNEWSTV) — Poland assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk pledging to prioritize security and unity during a six-month term marked by global challenges.
“Our task will be to convince all 27 EU member states that Europe can continue to be the safest, most stable place on Earth,” Tusk said, emphasizing the presidency’s motto, Security, Europe!
Tusk outlined plans for a comprehensive security policy, including continued support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. “This can only be achieved together,” he said, highlighting the importance of solidarity across the bloc.
The Polish presidency’s priorities include strengthening the EU’s external borders, countering the instrumentalization of migration, and ensuring economic resilience. “Shared security is not only about enhancing Europe’s defensive capabilities but also about ensuring competitiveness, energy independence, and food security,” Tusk said.
Poland also aims to reduce barriers for industry and entrepreneurs to maintain Europe’s competitiveness in the global market. “The European Union is not just the policy of 27 nations but, above all, a single market and trade network,” Tusk stated.
During its term, Poland will oversee discussions on enhancing Europe’s defensive capabilities, promoting innovation, and reinforcing the EU’s core values of democracy, the rule of law, and cooperation.
“We will do everything to ensure that Europe’s security is a reality, not just an aspiration,” Tusk said, expressing hope that Poland’s leadership will contribute to lasting peace.
