BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union on Saturday welcomed a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that promises the phased release of hostages and an end to hostilities, offering hope to families after more than 15 months of anguish.
“We are relieved that the hostages, including several EU nationals, will finally be reunited with their loved ones,” the EU said in a statement issued on behalf of the bloc by Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for High Representative Kaja Kallas.
“It is vital that the deal is fully implemented to ensure a permanent end to hostilities and that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need.”
The ceasefire, brokered with the assistance of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, is seen as a critical step toward easing humanitarian suffering in the region. EU officials commended the mediators’ efforts, describing the agreement as “a significant achievement” with potential implications for broader Middle East stability.
Since Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the region has been engulfed in escalating violence. Civilian casualties, particularly among children, were condemned by the EU as “unacceptable.”
The EU also renewed its call for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza. “Displaced Gazans should be ensured a safe and dignified return to their homes,” the statement noted.
Looking ahead, the bloc reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution, advocating for Israel and Palestine to coexist in peace and security. It pledged continued support for the Palestinian Authority to address pressing needs and drive reforms, while engaging with Israel and international partners to revive the peace process.
“This agreement must mark the beginning of a sustained effort toward lasting peace in the region,” the statement concluded.
