European Union Expresses Concerns and Encourages Transparency Following Bangladesh’s Parliamentary Elections

The European Union (EU), High Representative has expressed observations and concerns regarding the recent parliamentary elections held in Bangladesh on the preceding Sunday. Emphasizing the enduring EU-Bangladesh partnership, the statement underscored the significance of shared values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The EU acknowledged the election results while regretting the absence of participation by all major parties in the electoral process. Highlighting the commitment to transparency, the statement welcomed the authorities’ decision to disclose the forthcoming report and recommendations of the EU Election Expert Mission. It urged relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and timely investigation into any reported election irregularities.

Expressing deep concern over acts of violence during the electoral period, the EU called for restraint from all parties in the post-election phase. The statement stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, judicial independence, due process, and the right to peaceful assembly, noting with concern the detention of opposition figures.

The EU strongly encouraged all stakeholders to uphold political pluralism, democratic values, and international human rights standards, emphasizing the need for peaceful dialogue. The statement urged that media, civil society, and political parties be able to carry out their work without censorship or fear of reprisals.

Assuring continued collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, the EU expressed its commitment to working on political, human rights, trade, and development priorities. Notably, the statement referenced the potential inclusion of Bangladesh in the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) preferential trade scheme in the future.

The EU’s statement reflects its commitment to fostering a relationship with Bangladesh based on shared values and principles, while also expressing concerns and urging corrective measures for a fair and democratic electoral process.
