European Union Initiates Accession Talks with Ukraine and Moldova

In a significant move, the heads of state and government of the European Union reached a consensus on Thursday in Brussels to commence accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, expressing Estonia’s steadfast support for the accession of Ukraine and Moldova, emphasized the preservation of European Union unity. “The inclusion of candidate countries in our considerations ensures the integrity of the European Union, allowing us to face them with confidence,” stated the Prime Minister.

Particularly highlighting the initiation of accession talks with Ukraine, Prime Minister Kallas remarked, “In the face of the ongoing brutal war spanning nearly two years, the Ukrainian people deserve hope. Their remarkable efforts in meeting EU conditions are duly recognized by this invitation. Joining the European Union is just one step; Ukraine must also become a member of NATO, the world’s most formidable defense alliance,” she added.

Prime Minister Kallas is actively participating in the European Council, which commenced on Thursday. The primary agenda includes EU enlargement, sustained support for Ukraine, and reaching an agreement on a supplementary EU budget for the upcoming four years.
