BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and former Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s newly designated High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, have pledged to strengthen defense cooperation between the two organizations. The leaders met to discuss accelerating joint efforts on deterrence and defense strategies.
“We talked about harnessing NATO and the EU’s unique and essential partnership to step up our deterrence and defense,” Rutte said in a post on X on Tuesday following the meeting. He emphasized the need for “faster and better defense production” as a cornerstone of the alliance’s future efforts.
The European Iron Lady, who is poised to take on the EU’s top diplomatic post, echoed the importance of the collaboration.
“Thank you, dear Mark!” she responded on X. “Looking forward to the EU-NATO close cooperation!”
The meeting comes as both NATO and the EU face rising geopolitical challenges and pressure to enhance their military capabilities. Rutte stressed the importance of efficiency and speed in defense production to ensure preparedness, a topic that has gained traction as the ongoing was in Ukraine clocks one thousand days.
Their dialogue reflects a broader strategy to deepen the synergy between NATO and the EU, which, despite having different structures, share a mutual interest in protecting the security and stability of the region.
This partnership, Rutte indicated, is crucial to ensuring a united front in addressing both conventional and emerging threats.
