Agency Report –
Weidel outraged
The weekly newspaper ‘Junge Freiheit’ had reported on an entry on the intranet of the Federal Police, according to which officers are informed of possible consequences under civil service law if they are active for a secured right-wing extremist party. AfD leader Alice Weidel spoke of an ‘attack on political freedom of opinion and the independence of our security authorities that violates fundamental rights’.
The ministry had referred the federal police to the applicable legal situation in August, the spokesperson explained. ‘We are talking about active involvement in a secure extremist organisation.’ The ministry added that running for election was to be considered such active involvement. The superior would then be obliged to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
Relevant national association
According to the spokesperson, it is also relevant which AfD state association a civil servant is a member of. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is monitoring the party as a suspected right-wing extremist organisation. The state associations in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt have been categorised as right-wing extremist by the respective state Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) did not wish to comment on the intranet entry. ‘As a matter of principle, the BMI does not influence posts on the internal communication channels of the Federal Police.’
