ZURICH, Switzerland, January 14, 2024 – Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, expressed his optimism for a “fantastic tournament” following the opening match of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023, where hosts Côte d’Ivoire faced Guinea-Bissau.
Mr. Infantino, known for his unwavering support of football development in Africa, attended the historic match at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, alongside the Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, CAF President and FIFA Vice President Patrice Motsepe, and various dignitaries. The match marked a victorious start for the Elephants, setting a positive tone for the entire tournament.
“The opening game of the historic CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 between Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau has set the tone for a fantastic tournament that will unite the whole of Africa and indeed the world,” said Mr. Infantino.
He expressed his appreciation for President Ouattara’s presence at the match, emphasizing the significance of the tournament for the host country. “My best wishes are with CAF, led by President Patrice Motsepe; with all the participating nations; and with the people of Africa. I am sure everyone will come together to put on a show the world will remember,” added Mr. Infantino.
