General Ibrahim Babangida Reflects On Gani Fawehinmi And Handling Critics

In a candid revelation during an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, former Nigerian Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, opened up about his relationship with the late Gani Fawehinmi, describing him as a good critic whom he tried to befriend without success.

General Babangida acknowledged Fawehinmi’s role as a vocal human rights activist and lawyer, stating, “If we come up with a policy, my first question to my staff was: What would Gani Fawehinmi say? I like listening to him. I made it a point to become his friend. He was very friendly with one of my former ministers, the late Alex Akinyele; they were very good friends, and (Alex) he tried to make us very good friends.”

Despite the attempt to build a friendship, Babangida noted Fawehinmi’s reluctance to be associated with someone perceived as ‘an evil genius,’ a label often attached to the former military leader.

Reflecting on the moniker ‘evil genius’ frequently used by critics during his tenure, General Babangida revealed that he learned to accommodate criticisms. The octogenarian leader demonstrated a level of self-awareness, acknowledging that handling criticism was a part of leadership, especially in a diverse and vibrant society like Nigeria.

In discussing his leadership style, Babangida emphasized his eye for talent during his time as Nigeria’s head of state, expressing pride in recruiting the best minds for his cabinet. He highlighted his persuasion skills in convincing bright individuals to join his administration, presenting it as a commitment to Nigeria’s development.

Gani Fawehinmi, who lived from April 1938 to September 2009, was detained numerous times during Babangida’s regime, marking a period of tension and political activism in Nigeria.

The interview also touched on various historical events, such as the posthumous award given to MKO Abiola, the possibility of a sit-tight presidency in Nigeria, and General Abacha’s rule following Babangida’s tenure. These topics provided a comprehensive look into Nigeria’s political landscape during a crucial period in its history.

As General Babangida’s reflections shed light on his leadership approach and relationships with key figures like Gani Fawehinmi, the interview invites further contemplation on the complex dynamics that shaped Nigeria’s political trajectory.
